ACBSP stands for the Association of Collegiate Business Schools and Programs. ACBSP was founded in 1988 and is a specialized accrediting agency that emphasizes quality in teaching and learning outcomes.
Accreditation in the US takes place at different levels. The US Department of Education, the Council for Higher Education Association (CHEA) and the Association of Specialized and Professional Accreditors (ASPA) approve and grant power to associations that oversee accreditation at the regional, institutional or specialized program level. Institutional accreditation reviews entire colleges and universities, while specialized agencies award accreditation for professional programs and academic units in particular fields of study.
The specialized function of ACBSP focuses on business schools and programs within colleges and universities that have already received institutional accreditation. As a specialized agency, ACBSP's criteria and process to implement a separate accreditation in accounting were approved by the Board of Commissioners in November 2007, and as of August 2008, there were 585 member institutions in various countries around the world, 413 of which received official accreditation.
