EQUIS accreditation--which stands for the European Quality Improvement System (EQUIS)--is granted by the European Federation of Management Development (EFMD) to business schools demonstrating that they deliver high quality education for international management. EQUIS is not primarily focused on any specific degree program; its scope covers all programs offered by an institution from the first degree up to the PhD.
Accreditation is granted after a rigorous self-assessment by the school and independent confirmation through interviews with students, faculty, staff, university executives and the business community. This process facilitates standard setting, benchmarking, mutual learning, and the dissemination across borders of good practice.
EQUIS has not been designed to substitute for national accreditation systems, but rather to give recognition to institutions that, in addition to achieving high standing in their national environments, have demonstrated that they can also be strong players on a wider international stage.
EQUIS was created in 1997 by a mandate of EFMD member business schools including Bocconi, HEC Paris, IESE, IMD, INSEAD, ESADE, London Business School and Rotterdam School of Management. The creation of EQUIS was inspired by the need to develop an international accreditation system for those business schools, wherever they were in the world, that were trying to make an impact beyond their domestic frontiers. EQUIS has now accredited 105 management schools in 30 countries.
